The Temple of Dawn

The Temple of Dawn - Bangkok

Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn

An unmistakable symbol of Bangkok, located on the Thonburi west bank of the Chao Phraya River, Wat Arun derives its name from the Hindu god Aruna, often depicted as the rays of the rising sun. The twinkle and shine of its enormous central prang and attendant spires are from the myriad pieces of broken ceramics and glass embedded upon the surface. A temple has stood upon this site since long before Bangkok was founded, and its present form dates back to King Rama III, who reigned from 1824 to 1851.
